How NASA Uses Render Time Procedurals for Scientific Data Visualization

Kel Elkins is a data visualizer with NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. He works with scientists to visualize data from NASA missions, including both observational data (from satellites, aircraft, etc.) and supercomputer simulations. These visualizations promote a greater understanding of Earth and Space Science research activities at NASA. Kel holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science and Game Technology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

Greg Shirah has degrees in computer science and mathematics from the University of Georgia and from the George Washington University. Greg has worked with computer graphics at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt Maryland for over 35 years. Greg has had made numerous contributions to SIGGRAPH over the years including the computer animation festival, art gallery, traveling art show, dailies, panels, and special sessions. He is currently the lead visualizer at NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio where he designs and develops data-driven scientific visualizations for NASA public outreach.

Description: At NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, we have implemented methods to procedurally read science data files and generate graphics at render time. This procedural workflow accelerates visualization production and iteration.


PaintersView: Automatic Suggestion of Optimal Viewpoints for 3D Texture Painting

Yuka Takahashi is a senior student at the Computer Science Department, the University of Tokyo. Her research interests lie in the intersection of computer graphics and compilers.

Tsukasa Fukusato is currently an assistant professor at the Computer Science Department at the University of Tokyo. He received a Ph.D. degree from the Department of Pure and Applied Physics at Waseda University in 2017. His main research areas are computer graphics and human-computer interaction such as computational geometry.

Takeo Igarashi is a professor at the Computer Science Department, the University of Tokyo. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Information Engineering Department, the University of Tokyo, in 2000. His research interest is in the user interface in general and the current focus is on interaction techniques for 3D graphics.

Description: To solve the tedious manual viewpoint operation problem, we propose an automatic suggestion of optimal viewpoints for 3D texture painting. We will show a demo and the user study results.

Xiaokun Wang received his Ph.D. degree in computer science and technology from University of Science and Technology Beijing, in 2017. Currently, he is a postdoctor and lecturer at University of Science and Technology Beijing. His research interests include computer graphics, virtual reality and human-computer interaction.

Sinuo Liu received her undergraduate diploma in computer science and technology from University of Science and Technology Beijing, in 2016. Currently, she is a Ph.D. student at University of Science and Technology Beijing. Her research field is computer graphics, especially physically-based fluid simulation.

Xiaojuan Ban is a professor of computer science and technology and leader of the Computer Animation Group at University of Science and Technology Beijing. She received her master in computer application and PhD degree in control theory and control engineerin from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. Her research interests include computer graphics, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, big data analysis and 3D visualization

Yanrui Xu received his undergraduate diploma in computer science and technology from University of Science and Technology Beijing, in 2017. Currently, he is a postgraduate student at University of Science and Technology Beijing. His research field is computer graphics, especially fluid simulation.

Jing Zhou is a undergraduate student at University of Science and Technology Beijing. He will receive his undergraduate diploma in computer science and technology in 2019.

Cong Wang is a undergraduate student at University of Science and Technology Beijing. He will receive his undergraduate diploma in computer science and technology in 2019.

Description: We present a SPH based method of recovering turbulence details for low viscosity incompressible fluids by recovering the energy lost in DOFs for SPH particles.
