Abstract: Conventionally to make wound props, firstly artists carved wound sculpture using oil clay and made the wound mold by pouring plaster over the finished sculpture and got the wound props by pouring silicone into the wound mold but it takes a lot of time and effort to learn how to handle materials or to acquire wound carving techniques. This paper suggests a simple and rapid way for users to create a wound mold model from a wound image and to print one using a 3D printer and our method provides the easy-to-use capabilities for wound molds production.

Abstract: We developed a tool for learning basic programming concepts designed for elementary school children. A tangible user interface of this tool can be programmed by directly combining parts with a physical form. In this way, we attempted to resolve several problems, including the typical obstacles encountered in learning programming languages by small children such as text input via a keyboard, strict syntax rule requirements, and difficulties associated with group learning involving multiple participants. The Interviews and demonstrations at some conferences proved the concept of this tool, which promotes the understanding of programming by cooperative learning via a tangible user interface.

His research seeks to link basic science to real-world applications with interest in using his expertise in Human Factors and Kinesiology for the development and enhancement of medical devices and products that can be utilized for preventive, diagnostic, and rehabilitative purposes. His dissertation research will investigate ways to mitigate cybersickness with VR head-mounted displays. He's particularly drawn to mitigating cybersickness in VR because he believes there are immense practical applications with VR. One area that he wishes to further dive into is augmenting physical rehabilitation with VR.

Naveen Elangovan is a postdoctoral research associate in University of Minnesota. He graduated with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree in 2006. Before he moved to Minnesota for his M.S. in Kinesiology in 2009, he practiced Physical Therapy for about two and a half years in India. During his masters program, he majored in Biomechanics and Neural Control. In 2016, he earned his PhD in Kinesiology from University of Minnesota. His research interests revolve around movement neuroscience and neurological rehabilitation. His current research focuses on enhancing proprioceptive function and motor performance in healthy and neurological population using robotic technology.

Reuben Gardos Reid is an undergraduate research assistant developing software at the Human Sensorimotor Control Lab at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. In addition pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science, he has spent the last three years at the lab working on the WristBot rehabilitation robot project. His research interests include application machine learning and how it can be applied in both the medical and environmental sciences.

Jiapeng Xu is a Ph.D. student of Human Sensorimotor Control Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. His current work focuses specifically on the development of robot-aided rehabilitation devices. His research interest include neural engineering, more specifically brain-computer interface (BCI). He has four years of experience in motor imagery based BCI developing. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree that focuses on movement neuroscience. He believes that by having this clinical research experience, he will have a deeper understanding of mechanisms of movement, which will aid him with his future career goals.

Jürgen Konczak is a Full Professor in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota. He is the head of the Human Sensorimotor Control Laboratory. Abstract: This study proposes an interface device for augmenting multisensory reality based on a visually unified experience with a high level of consistency between real and virtual worlds using video see-through type mixed reality (MR). By putting on an MR head-mounted display (HMD) and holding a box-shaped device, virtual objects are displayed within the box, and both vibrations and reactions are presented in a synchronized way based on the dynamics of objects. Furthermore, one can also hear the sound emitted from virtual objects using 3D sound localization.

Ken Iwasaki got his B.S. (Biochemistry) and M.S. (Computer Science) in 2008, 2010, respectively. His main research area is Human Computer Interaction. When he was a graduate student, he was selected as a creator of IPA:Exploratory IT Human Resources Project (The MITOH Program) and learned R&D and project management. After he graduated, he experienced business consulting at Accenture, and R&D management at RIKEN (Brain Science Institute). In 2012, he co-founded H2L, Inc. with Dr. Tamaki and Dr. Kamada. Emi Tamaki is researching to interact haptic sensation and physical sensation between computer and human. Her goal is to share rich body experiences by facilitating information exchange between humans and computers. She received her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Informatics from the University of Tokyo in 2012. She also received President’s Award of the University of Tokyo. In 2012, she co-founded H2L, Inc. H2L developed a product UnlimitedHand that is a version of PossessedHand for sales. New research project and the product “FirstVR” ,which corroborates with NTT docomo 5G, is released in 2019.

Abstract: We present a portable multi-camera system for recording panoramic light field video content. The proposed system is capable of capturing wide baseline (0.8 meters), high resolution (>15 pixels per degree), large field of view (>220 degree) light fields at 30 frames per second. The array contains 47 time-synchronized cameras distributed on the surface of a hemispherical plastic dome. We use commercially available action sports cameras (Yi 4k) mounted inside the dome. The dome, mounts, triggering hardware and cameras are inexpensive and the array is easy to fabricate.

Michael Wimmer is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Computer Graphics and Algorithms at TU Wien, where he heads the Rendering and Modeling Group and is the director of the Center for Geometry and Computational Design. His academic career started with his M.Sc. in 1997 at TU Wien, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2001. His research interests are real-time rendering, computer games, real-time visualization of urban environments, point-based rendering, procedural modeling and shape modeling. He has coauthored over 100 papers in these fields. He also coauthored the book Real-Time Shadows.

Abstract: Conventional light-field methods of producing 3D images having circular parallax on a tabletop surface require several hundred projectors. Our novel approach produces a similar light field using only 1/10 the number of projectors. Adopting our method, two cylindrical mirrors are inserted in the projection light paths. By appropriately folding the paths with the mirrors, we form any viewpoint image in an annular viewing area from a group of rays sourced from all projectors arranged on a circle.

Jason is an undergraduate student enrolled in the Materials Science and Engineering (Hons)/Master of Biomedical Engineering program at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). He concurrently conducts research at the Sensory Processes Research Laboratory (UNSW Sydney), focusing on multisensory perception through virtual reality. Jason has a keen passion for Computer Aided Design (CAD) and its application in 3D printing and fabrication technologies. He applies his fabrication ability to research into display technologies, including HMDs. Jason's current work involves latency testing and benchmarking VR systems to assess the impact of display lag on cybersickness.

Juno Kim, UNSW Sydney, Australia
Juno is the lead researcher of the Sensory Processes Research Laboratory, University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney). He conducts research examining the effects of multisensory integration on human performance and perception. One recent area of interest has been to understand how display lag affects perception of self-motion, presence and cybersickness in virtual environments. Dr Kim is also devoted to promoting health technology innovation (HTI) throughout the Asia Pacific region. His collective works have appeared in top outlets, including Neurology, Journal of Vision, Current Biology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Nature Neuroscience.

Wilson Luu, UNSW Sydney, Australia
Wilson Luu graduated from UNSW with a Bachelor of Optometry (Hons) in 2015. Since graduating, Wilson worked as a staff optometrist in rural NSW and metropolitan Sydney, and he travelled overseas to provide eye care to the Nepalese Everest community. Wilson held positions on the Young Optometrists NSW/ACT executive team and has been a speaker at several of their events. He is currently exploring the application of virtual reality in patients with eye disease at the Centre for Eye Health. He has interests in ocular pathology and advancements in technology to be used in eye care.

Stephen Palmisano, University of Wollongong, Australia
Stephen Palmisano is internationally recognised as an expert on self-motion perception and vection (i.e., the illusion of self-motion). Over the last 20 years he has shown that stereoscopic motion, changes in optical size, viewpoint jitter and eye-movements all play important roles in vection. Stephen is also well known for his research on stereoscopic depth perception, postural control when standing, and motion sickness. In the last decade he has focussed this expertise into his research on simulation and virtual reality (including his studies on simulation based mines rescue training and cybersickness from head-mounted displays).

Abstract: Higher education is embracing a digital transformation in a relatively slow adoption rate, with few fragmented solutions to portray the capabilities of new immersive technologies like Virtual Reality (VR). One may argue that deployment costs and substantial levels of design knowledge might be critical stagnation factors to create effective Virtual Immersive Educational (VIE) systems. We attempt to address these impediments in a cost-effective and user-friendly VIE system. In this paper, we report in brief the main elements of this design and initial result and lessons learned.

Abstract: BookVIS is a visual "companion" that recognizes a book’s cover, and uses it instantly to provide users with information about the book. After snapping a photo of the book, the app generates the visual dashboard that users may use for further exploration. The system allows users to identify and discover more information on books from pictures of book covers taken on their smartphones. With the presented system and its interplay between real and digital worlds, new avenues could be opened for creating new dimensions for adaptive visualizations.

The research questions we are tackling in our group include, among others, how large collections of data, e.g., high-dimensional and spatial-temporal data, and 3D object data, can be visually explored and analysed for data understanding and decision making.

Alexei Sourin, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Dr. Alexei Sourin was born in Moscow and received his M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in computer graphics from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, Russia (MEPhI) in 1983 and 1988, respectively. From 1983 to 1993 he was a researcher at MEPhI where he worked on different scientific visualization and computer animation projects. Since 1993 he held faculty positions at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, except a period from 1999 to 2000 when he was Associate Professor at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT).

Abstract: We propose a novel method to present the internal structure of volumetric data using midair haptics to solve the occlusion problem in volumetric visualization. The proposed method simplifies internal structures by approximating them using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and converts them into haptic stimuli. We applied this technique to 3D microscopy.

Mitsuru Ito, Nikon Corporation, The University of Tokyo, Japan
Mitsuru Ito is a researcher at Nikon Corporation and a Ph.D. student in the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, Japan. He received his M.S degree in Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo in 2015. His research interests include midair haptic interfaces and aerial displays.

Yuji Kokumai, Nikon Corporation, Japan
Yuji Kokumai is an R&D manager of Technology Strategy Department at Nikon Corporation. His research and engineering work focuses on image processing, 3D measurement, and user interface. He received BE and ME degrees in computer science from Hokkaido University, Japan.

Having an extensive research background in biomedical science and a longstanding interest in the visual arts, Andrew works as the lead pre-rendered content developer in the lab. He specializes in developing creative solutions to complex visualizations in addition to carrying out a supportive role in the lab’s interactive VR content development.

Shereen R. Kadir, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
Shereen Kadir is originally from London, UK, and has a background in Biochemistry. She worked as a post-doctoral research scientist for many years specializing in cell biology and microscopy. Having a passion for art, she transitioned into a career in medical visualization and science communication. She is particularly interested in 3D animation and VR to help scientists explain difficult concepts and hypotheses.

Rowan T. Hughes, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
Rowan Hughes grew up in Galway, Ireland, an altogether wonderful place (if a bit wet). Having a PhD in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin and experience in the VFX business, Rowan is a veteran computer scientist and researcher with a passion for computer graphics, simulation, data science and Star Wars.

Nicholas J. Gunn, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
Nick Gunn is the lead 3D Unity Artist at the 3D Visualisation Aesthetics Lab. With a background in architecture, game design and multimedia production, Nick's work explores new forms of communication through 3D spatiality and virtual kinaesthetics.

Campbell W. Strong, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
Campbell acts as lead technical developer in the lab. He has a background in molecular microbiology, film VFX, and making movies about molecular machines. The adoption of game and film 3D modelling software for showcasing biological systems has afforded great directorial freedoms, but are often lacking in the tools required to bring in raw scientific data sets and work with them in accurate and articulated ways. Campbell spends time addressing this gap by mashing his keyboard.

Benjamin J. Bailey, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
John Bailey is the lead Virtual Reality developer of the 3D Visualisation Aesthetics Lab. Coming from a background in the advertising and games industries, he specializes in real-time 3D worldbuilding and serves as the creative and technical lead for the lab's interactive VR projects.

Robert G. Parton, University of Queensland, Australia
Rob is Group Leader of the Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine Division at the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (University of Queensland). As a CBNS Chief Investigator and co-leader of the JTCC project, Rob and his team generate cellular and molecular imaging data in astonishing detail which forms the foundational structures of the interactive cellular VR landscapes. Rob has a keen interest in immersive visualizations of cellular imaging data and how the platform might enhance our understanding of the living world.

John B. McGhee, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
John McGhee is a praciticing 3D Computer Artist and the Director of the 3D Visualisation Aesthetics Lab. His visual practice explores art and design-led modes of visualising complex scientific and biomedical data using 3D computer arts approaches, most recently Virtual Reality (VR) Head Mounted Displays (HMD). In early 2016, he was recognised as one of UNSW Sydney’s 20 ‘Rising Stars’ and emerging research leaders

Abstract: This research project uses machine learning techniques to generate optimised embeddings of graphs in different types of geometric spaces. Our approach utilises non-euclidean geometries in the data processing and visualisation stages. This results in a flexible, versatile, and interactive visualisation tool, which is suitable for a variety of graph analytics use cases across different high-end visualisation systems and display types.

Daniel Filonik is a Postdoctoral Fellow in High Performance Visualisation at the EPICentre, UNSW Art and Design, Sydney, Australia. His research interests are in Information Visualisation, Computer Graphics and Human-Computer Interaction. His current work focuses on developing natural interfaces for interactive data exploration in immersive environments. Previously, Daniel conducted his PhD research at the Urban Informatics Research Lab, QUT, Brisbane, Australia. He investigated challenges and opportunities of data visualisation and composition interfaces based on large-scale display walls. In particular, these technologies were applied to explore the notion of Participatory Data Analytics, a collaborative, community-led approach to the interpretation of data.

Tian Feng, La Trobe University, Australia
Dr Tian Feng is a Lecturer in Interactive Digital Media at La Trobe University. He earned his BSc degree in Geographic Information Systems from Zhejiang University in 2012, and his PhD degree in Information Systems Technology and Design from the Singapore University of Technology and Design in 2017. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Visualisation, Simulation and AI at UNSW EPICentre. His research interests focus on Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, and Artificial Intelligence.

Ke Sun, CSIRO's Data61, Australia
Ke did a PhD in computer science in Département d’informatique, Université de Genève in Switzerland. From 2016 to 2017, he was a postdoc in École Polytechnique in Paris and then in King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. Since 2018, he is a machine learning researcher in Data61 in Sydney. In 2017, Ke received the “Prix de l’excellence de l’UNIGE” from University of Geneva.

Richard Nock, CSIRO's Data61, Australia
Richard is an Adjunct Professor at the Australian National University, the University of Sydney and a Senior Principal Researcher, Data61. He defended a PhD in computer science under the supervision of Olivier Gascuel and an accreditation to lead research (HDR) in computer science with Michel Habib. He graduated simultaneously in computer science and in agronomical engineering ("Ingénieur Agro", majors in statistics and industrial microbiology), after two years of CPGE ("Classes Préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles"). His interests cover Machine Learning, Privacy, Information Geometry at large.

Research and development leader, building cutting edge graph analytics and machine learning technology for data scientists. Skilled in research and development, delivering technology, data science, software engineering, team leadership, machine learning and computational physics. Strong research, engineering and management professional with a PhD in Physics from University of New South Wales.

Tomasz Bednarz, EPICentre, UNSW Art & Design, Australia
Tomasz Bednarz is an A/Professor and Director and Head of Visualisation at the Expanded Perception and Interaction Centre (EPICentre) UNSW Art & Design and Team Leader at CSIRO’s Data61 (Visual Analytics Team, Software & Computational Systems Program). He is also AI/CI at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS) and holds Adjunct positions at the QUT (School of Mathematical Sciences), University of Sydney (Design Lab) and University of South Australia (School of IT and Math Sciences). He has done his doctorate and masters in computational science area.
